Cricket in St Lucia
Cricket is by far, one of the leading sports in St. Lucia – with the standards of domestic players and competitions, arguably the highest amongst the sports played on the island. This has been enhanced by the construction of the first rate Beausejour stadium, which is used by the West Indies and the highly successful local women cricketers. A ground Brian Lara calls “possibly the best in the Caribbean” annually hosts tests ODI’s and games in the West Indies limited-overs and four-day cricket competitions. It is also an attractive destination for pre-season training for English county and club teams; England were based here for the first leg of the 2007 World Cup.
St. Lucia is also currently basking in the reflected glory of having one of their own sons of the soil appointed as West Indies captain, with Darren Sammy the first ever Windward islander to gain the accolade.
