Coaching

in

St Lucia

Program Description

Our netball coaching project will give you the chance to work with a children and adults across St Lucia. You will have the opportunity to coach in schools and local communities, as well as helping with local clubs and our summer camps. The program is aimed to use sports as a vehicle for change combating prevalent social issues in some of St. Lucia’s most disadvantaged communities. Many young people in St Lucia come from disadvantaged background, with issues such as gang culture and childhood obesity.

Aims & Objectives

The overall aim of our grassroots projects is to equip all children in the region with the means to play and enjoy sport and reap the obvious health and developmental benefits. When coaching we encourage you to not only to develop players basic skills but also to increase their enthusiasm, participation and enjoyment of the game. The emphasis is always on fun! Netball is a fantastic mechanism for change and we try to use it with our at-risk young females to help empower them and improve their self-esteem.

Schedule

Your timetable as a volunteer coach will vary on when you volunteer, but in general you will having sessions during the week with weekends free to explore St Lucia. Daily sessions tend to run from 13:00 to 15:00, which can then be followed by an after school session until around 17:00. Occasionally they will be senior or club training which tends to run from 17:00 until dark.

Program participant criteria

To volunteer as a coach you must be a minimum of 18 years old. There is no maximum age and we welcome everyone who is passionate to help. But our volunteers do tend on average to be aged 18 to 25.

No coaching qualifications are required, just a desire to help others. Obviously a background in the sport you wish to coach is always helpful (and recommended). We try to tailor your coaching to your ability. If you are an experienced and confident coach then we can work to have you test your skills with a senior club team, or if you are just starting out you can be more involved with the schools program.
