Our tennis project looks to give you a varied selection of coaching opportunities, working with schools, local clubs and community groups. Tennis is a growing sport in St Lucia, and has a fantastic tennis facility in the north of the island. In our youth and community projects our aim is to introduce the children to the sport and encouraged an increased participation across the island. Therefore our coaching session look not only to develop basic skills but also to increase the enthusiasm, participation and enjoyment of the game. Here the emphasis is on fun!
Your placement will see you based some days at the national tennis centre working with their youth development projects, and maybe even honing your own skills with a friendly knock around. Here you will be working with some of the islands top coaches to help prepare players for upcoming tournaments or developing certain skills and abilities.
Aims and Objectives
The most important aims of our projects are fun and involvement. We want to give as many children, teenages and adults the opportunity to be involved in sport and thrive. Sport is a fantastic tool for change and we aim to help reduce gang involvement, increase health and encourage our young people to excel in school and sport.
Your timetable as a volunteer coach will vary on when you volunteer, but in general you will having sessions during the week with weekends free to explore St Lucia. Daily sessions tend to run from 13:00 to 15:00, which can then be followed by an after school session until around 17:00. Occasionally they will be senior or club training which tends to run from 17:00 until dark.
Program participant criteria
To volunteer as a coach you must be a minimum of 18 years old. There is no maximum age and we welcome everyone who is passionate to help. But our volunteers do tend on average to be aged 18 to 25.
No coaching qualifications are required, just a desire to help others. Obviously a background in the sport you wish to coach is always helpful (and recommended). We try to tailor your coaching to your ability. If you are an experienced and confident coach then we can work to have you test your skills at the national tennis academy, or if you are just starting out you can be more involved with the schools program.
